Guest Artist: Teresa Cook
“Beyond the Box: Mini Watercolors on Yupo"
Cypress Village, Egret Room
This innovative artist welcomes JWS members to paint along with her at the meeting. You’ll explore the freedom and unpredictability of watercolor on 5x7 Yupo paper, learning when to pause, wait, and let the surface dry. This demo is about trusting the process, embracing imperfections, and allowing the painting to surprise you. This is a demonstration designed to help you see watercolor differently, especially if you’re curious about working looser, experimenting with Yupo, or scaling ideas down into small but expressive works.
By painting along will learn how to:
• work with Yupo instead of fighting it. You’ll understand water control, drying time, and how to use Yupo’s slick surface to your advantage.
• build confidence painting outside the lines. The loose box approach helps release perfectionism and encourages expressive mark-making.
• see real-time decision making. You’ll observe when to step back, when to intervene, and how patience impacts the final result.
• perfect for mini work and series creation. Great for artists interested in small-format paintings, studies, or building cohesive mini collections.
• create a relaxed and encouraging environment. This demo is process-driven, not outcome-driven, making it ideal for artists at any stage.
We will be setting up tables for 24 members and others may paint from their seats if they bring a suitable surface to work on. (Tables will be available after setup but not before 5:30 pm)
Yupo paper, 5” x 7” pieces will be provided by JWS for Mini Painting,
Please bring the following supplies if you want to paint along (think small):
Watercolor paper, 2 or more small pieces for testing colors and sketching,
Round brushes (not ones that hold a lot of water),
Watercolor paints (smaller palette for small paintings)
Small water container, paper towels, surface to work on (if not at a table).
Cypress Village asks that all water containers be emptied in the bathroom toilets, not the sink.
Teresa Cook was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida. She is a self-taught Abstract Architectural Watercolor artist and has been painting watercolor for 11 years. She obtained her BFA from University of North Florida in 2012, in Painting, Drawing, and Printmaking.
Teresa creates mini watercolor abstractions using multiple materials, like pastel, gold-leaf and more and has branded her miniature artwork sold out of her Mini Cooper as “Minis in my Mini”. Her watercolor and ink paintings created on “yupo” are meant to capture a moment in time.
Over the last 10 years, Teresa has been traveling to different locations, including Amsterdam and Puerto Rico, as well as around her native city. She has displayed her art in the Ritz Theatre, the Cummer Museum, and at the Turner Arts Center, in Valdosta, Georgia. Teresa was an art instructor with Duval County Schools, Cathedral Arts Project, and her workshops are held at MOCA, First Coast Cultural Center, and privately in her “Back Porch Studio”.
